The story of Rickenbacker guitars
Rickenbacker guitars are among dome of the most sought after musical instruments available today. The brand has become synonymous with quality and its products are as universally popular today as they were several decades ago. Along with the likes of Gretsch guitars its models are bought by seasoned pros as well as learners and recreational players. If you are not too familiar with this classic make then here is the tale behind Rickenbacker guitars:
The Rickenbacker story began in Los Angeles, California in the 1920s. Steel guitars and other electric string instruments were coming to existence after it was discovered that metal moving through a magnetic field caused a disturbance which could then be translated into an electric current by a nearby coil of wire. Rickenbacker guitars sprung from the Rickenbacker International Corporation, which was founded in 1931 by Adolph Rickenbacker and steel guitar player George Beauchamp. Marketed a ‘Rickenbacker Electro Instruments’, the first products sold by the firm were the first modern electric guitars as we know it.
Rickenbacker guitars began to be produced on a commercial basis after prototypes were success. Beauchamp served as general manager and had hired some of the most experienced and competent craftsmen around while Swiss-born Rickenbacker was a very skilled production engineer with experience in a wide variety of manufacturing techniques. Six and seven string Hawaiian guitars would be the best known and most accepted 1930s Rickenbacker guitars. Naturally the company also sold amplifiers from the very beginning.
Along with the rock music explosion in the early 1950s there was a period of major change in the guitar marketplace as the popularity and sales of steels diminished and regular guitars enjoyed unprecedented demand. Rickenbacker guitars were bought by all sorts of players and into the 1960s the brand grew with invasion bands like The Beatles using their models. The likes of The Who also gave Rickenbacker guitars more credibility which it has maintained until the modern day.
