The tradition of Indian Art and Paintings has been carried on in the Indian subcontinent since the primitive times. The Indian Art, their styles and patterns are as diverse as the Indian people itself. The Indian art list includes Oil paintings, Acrylic on canvas, Landscape Art, Abstract Art, Decorative Art, Figurative Art, Religious Art, Portrait Paintings, oil classics, cave paintings, miniatures etc. Indian Art is pictorial expressions of painters which are marked by the subjects chosen from the Religious thoughts as well as daily life, birds and animals and natural objects like sun, moon, plants and trees. Indian Art paintings use very vibrant and natural colours and papers, clothes, leaves, earthen pots, mud walls, etc. are used as canvas. Indian Art is diverse in India and reflect rich cultural heritage and they are the true examples of artistic expression. They are so variable from region to region because of the availability of material in different area.

Indian Art include the various paintings of India that have been practiced since long times. Basically the Religious paintings based on different types like—Expressionism, Impressionism, Surrealism, Classical paintings, madhubani paintings, patachitra, kalighat paintings etc. are some of the famous Indian art paintings in the country. Indian art paintings include pictorial depictions as the Hindu deities like lord Krishna, Rama, Shiva, goddess Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. There are madhubani paintings of the sun, the moon and religious plants like ‘Tulsi’ are widely painted as also royal courts and social events like marriages. This tradition of Indian paintings is found in villages and rural areas practiced by various tribes. Indian paintings did not emerge in chronological order but evolved in various region of India depending mainly upon the rural cultures, mythological stories and everyday rituals.

Moithili art is an Indian Art persistent in some areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. It is told that the painting evolved when king of Mithila, Janak asked the painters to draw the marital ceremony of his daughter Sita with lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya. These paintings are made on various mediums such as clothes, hand made paper and canvas. The main themes of Moithili paintings contain images of Hindu gods and goddesses such as lord Krishna, Rama, Shiva, Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati etc. The village women paint the pictures of Ramayana, Mahabharata, Krishna Leela and other Hindu mythologies as well as birds, animals and other natural objects on the mud walls of their hut. Nowadays it is done on paper and clothes.

Indian Religious paintings that are inspired by the Bhakti movement. They are mainly based on the religious subjects that revolve around Lord Jagannath at Puri's famous Jagannath Temple. Hindu gods and goddesses are also depicted in the patachitra paintings. Indian Religious paintings are known for their bold lines and brilliant colours. It is a hereditary art practiced by the family of the painters usually living in the vicinities of the temples. Indian Religiuos paintings have an important role in the temples of Orissa. Indian Religious painting is a distinct art form that originated in Orissa. Patta in Sanskrit means 'clothes' and chitra means ‘paintings’. Each year, the painted wooden images of lord Jagannath along with Balabhadra and Shubhadra are ritually given the holy bath. Hence, they are removed from the Garbha Griha for painting.
