I have come to know about the sewage treatment plant while we have been planning to build a new house and wondering about the waste disposal system. I have tried to know about the sewage treatment plant and found that it is a facility intended to collect the waste from commercial, industrial as well as domestic sources that removes materials which damage the quality of water and compromise public safety and the environment when discharged into water receiving systems. For that reason, I have been looking for a sewage treatment plant which can solve the problems of waste and protect both public health and the environment. What types of materials do I need to get disposed with the sewage treatment plant? I know that variety of materials enter into the sewage system from a typical home; the list is varied and extensive. These materials include wastes from toilets; detergents, soap, and cleaning products from washing machines and drains; food items from trash disposals - all the things accompanied by large amounts of water. How can I get these materials get removed? Now, the question is how I can remove these materials so that the water we would use may be safely returned to the natural environment and, if possible it can be utilized again by other people in the community. When I have asked this question to a number of experts they have said that the answer of the question depends on where I live. The experts have informed me that if my home is not serviced by a public sewage system, our wastes can be treated with the septic tanks which are simply large concrete or steel tanks that are buried usually in the backyard. Some of the tanks can hold as much as 1,000 gallons or 4,000 litres of water. Wastewater comes into the tank from one side and leaves the tank from the other end. Usually the septic system is powered by only the gravity. As we live in an urban area where people live closer together and thus there is more wastewater to treat at one place, the community has a sewage system that gathers wastewater and takes it to the sewage treatment plant. The waste is processed in three stages:The first stage is the primary treatment, where solids are allowed to settle in the water and filths are allowed to rise so that they can be taken away with an incinerator or a landfill.The second stage is the secondary treatment, where organic materials are removed with the help of bacteria.The final stage is the tertiary treatment in which phosphorus, chlorine and nitrogen are removed from water with chemicals so that the water can be reused. Why do I need a sewage treatment plant? There are mainly three reasons for which we need the sewage treatment plant: 1. Waste stinks. If waste is released directly into the environment, then it can get very smelly very quickly. 2. It is a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. If materials such as human waste, which contains coliform bacteria and other bacteria that cause diseases, mix with the natural environment, it can become a serious health hazard. 3. It contains solids and chemicals like nitrogen, phosphates, and bacteria that affect the environment. Finally, after evaluating all these thing I have decided that the sewage treatment plant can easily solve the problems associated with the waste not only from the domestic sources but also from the commercial and industrial sources.
