According to UK regulator Ofcom, ‘Everything Everywhere’ will be allowed for reusing its 1800MHz spectrum for LTE services this year. Earlier this year, an application was submitted by the operator to extend its license for the spectrum to LTE. Everything Everywhere is working on some new plans which will be implemented before the end of this year. It plans to have the commercial service operation in the 1800MHz frequency. Ofcom has given a detailed statement in this regard. It said that allowing Everything Everywhere to reuse the spectrum is for the purpose to bring the material benefits to the consumers. It includes faster mobile broadband speeds and potentially wider mobile broadband coverage in the rural area which depends of the way how the spectrum is used by Everything Everywhere. In the statement, it has been said that whether using the spectrum by Everything Everywhere will distort competition was considered by Ofcom, and it has found that it would not. Ofcom also invited the interested parties to submit their views on the proposed change within four weeks. It was confirmed by Everything Everywhere to a news magazine that pushing for preferential access to sub-1GHz spectrum will be continued as it is still regarded by it that spectrum is the best for widespread broadband coverage. Moreover, it may also be that the handset availability will better in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands. But, many operators in Europe have said that the look of 1800MHz for LTE is liked by it. It provides the balance between coverage and capacity. The judgment to allow Everything Everywhere to reuse 1800MHz spectrum was taken in line with EC requirements. Under this, UK is needed to consider applications for eased 4G use of 900 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrum. According to a previous statement of Ofcom, liberalizing spectrum usage was required by Ofcom prior to the end of 2012, and it was fully confident about receiving sanction to start the procedure of getting ready for LTE before the final decision of Ofcom. Some of the 900MHz spectrum is already used by O2, and it will be surprising for some people that refarming own 900MHz spectrum for LTE will be considered by Vodafone also before obtaining licenses at 800MHZ and 2.6GHz.
