Remedies for concrete cancer in buildings
Some buildings with the space of time, around 5-10 years, start showing cracks in their structural concreter. A gradual depilating of the structure, showing flaks, rust stains and causes water to store in the concrete and leak out of the structure. Concrete cancer is used to define the deterioration of a building due to weather and contaminants and is more prone in poorly structured buildings. It is not just because of weather and dilapidation but a lot of gradual structure flaking happens due to problems in the concrete.
Generally the root cause of Concrete Cancer is given to the iron rusting. The rust forces the concrete away, the space made due to the expansion of steel or iron between is often taken by the water which gradually weakens the structure, displaces it and causes the concrete to crack or fall away.
The reasons behind the concrete flaking are too many:
• Poor treatment of the steel in the slab
• The use of steel or iron in the building is left too close to the surface allowing water to seep through concrete to reach to the iron or steel.
• Cracks in the concrete allowing the water to seep into and react with the steel.
•
Concrete cancer isn’t just eyesore, it could be life threatening to the people who live in the close proximity of the building or the structure or the passer by. The concrete cancer should be treated as soon as it starts showing up. Remedial Building measures should be taken to safeguard the building or the structure and to strengthen and protect the building.
One thing must be acknowledged while taking the remedial steps to concrete cancer. Any short term remedy to the flaking will only make the matter worse, because water will keep seeping into the space between the steel and the surface making the base weaker and causing further damage to the building.
In Australian cities there are many companies who look after concrete cancer. If you see a problem in a building or any structure you should contact them immediately for structural repairs.
The first step to cure the problem is for the concrete specialist to conduct an investigation into the state of your buildings problem. It is evident buildings and structures fail due to continuous water seeping into the structure. Concrete cancer is a serious problem however if treated early by experienced remedial builders the building or structure can be fixed and restored to new.
