Kim Tara Tabie - the Liberty Painter
Born in North Korea, Kim Tara Tabie was a daughter in a family of five, having three brothers and one sister. Being a girl in North Korea, she already had a hard life as her gender is still regarded as being inferior there, not to mention the fact that her family was very poor, barely making enough money to afford food and shelter. For Kim Tara Tabie, the only escape from her world, were the painting classes she had in school. While they were quite short and her creativity was a bit restrained to say the least, she still found joy in those classes, and tried to take the hobby home. Even though she could only draw with a pencil on a few sheets of paper, she kept at it whenever she could. At one point (it is a bit hard to determine a precise point at this stage) she decided that what she wanted to do in life was to become a painter. It gave her the freedom to not only express what she wanted to in painting, but it also allowed her to escape a daily reality in order to be in a place where she feels safe and comfortable.
However, with her family being poor, Kim Tara Tabie had to rely on her best friend (mostly financially), Myunghee Chun Kim in order to leave the country. While the two young women had different dreams, they still stuck together for the journey to the great land of opportunity known as the United States of America. When they arrived, Kim Tara Tabie acquainted herself with Gale Scott McCann Faverella, an art teacher who took a great liking to the types of drawings she was making. He liked them so much in fact that he offered to teach Kim Tara Tabie at a price that would be fair for her, regardless of what it was.
A few years of tenuous studies, sleepless nights and some shed tears, Kim Tara Tabie had finally sold her first major piece of work for $3,000, which marked the beginning of a long and illustrous career which was made possible by determination and perseverance, not to mention some support from friends and family.
