At this time of year it may seem tempting to take off on a long holiday Even when it is sunny outside most people are stuck in an office staring out the window and dreaming of a beach in distant lands. Of course, the necessity of work often means that you can’t jet off for a fortnight like you would wish but a shorter break can still revive you, with city trips a great way to bring your senses to life.
When most people think of a city break images of Paris spring to mind. The French capital has a lot to offer, with a climb up the steps to the top of the world famous Eiffel Tower an absolute must.
Others may imagine New York, with its bustling streets and some of the largest shops in the world waiting for you to explore. The Big Apple can be a fantastic place to visit but if you don’t fancy the long flight why not try somewhere in Europe.
Amsterdam offers something for everyone and caters to all ages and interests. Why not try one of the city's river cruises, a tour round the Heineken brewery or a visit to some of it's fantastic museums. Anne Frank’s house is also open to visitors and is well worth the trip – being able to see the tiny cramped area that the family lived really bring their story to life – where there are original pages from her diary on display.
Glasgow is another great destination for a short break. The city has a lot to offer and if you peek beneath the surface you will find fine food, entertainment and shopping in Scotland’s largest city. There is a huge range of activities to get involved in, from the Tennent’s Training Academy to indoor climbing or skiing on real snow in Xscape at Braehead. The Merchant City Festival is also returning for it's 11th year in the east of the city. The event has wide selection of entertainment from street art to music, dance, theatre and comedy as well as an assortment of fantastic cuisine.
Merchant City has some of the best restaurants and bars in Glasgow, with it well worth visiting Sapporo if Japanese food is your thing. It offersa unique dining experience where your food is freshly prepared in front of you by their entertaining chefs.
Glasgow is also a perfect place for a romantic getaway, with Boudoir bar in Merchant Square the perfect place for couples to visit. The French and Italian wine bar is sumptuously decorated and offers a huge range of wines and champagnes to suit all budgets and tastes. It also serves delicious snacks from antipasti to handmade cupcakes.
Glasgow Green is perfect for a leisurely stroll, with a stop at the People’s Palace to learn about the story of Glasgow and its people highly recommended. The museum provides a wonderful insight into how Glaswegians lived, worked and played throughout the city's history. In the adjacent Winter Gardens you can wander among the exotic palm trees and plants or enjoy a coffee at the café. Remember to stop outside and admire the restored Doulton Fountain.
Since you’ll never fit everything into one day, why not stay over in one of the fabulous hotels in GLasgow. You’ll need a good night's rest if you’re going to have a hope of keeping up with the locals, but if you want to take it a bit easier grab your popcorn and head to the tallest cinema in the world on Renfrew Street.
