Movie Review (Synopsis):

This past May, Neil Young brought his solo tour to Toronto's Massey Hall, an iconic venue in the city of his birth. Jonathan Demme was on hand to capture the two nights, which highlighted new songs from the album Le Noise, produced by Daniel Lanois, mixed with classics like "Ohio" and "I Believe in You." At sixty-five, Young retains a youthful vitality and musical curiosity that balances his wisdom and experience. It's no wonder he's been an inspiration to the likes of Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth. In Neil Young Journeys, Demme intersperses the Massey Hall concert footage with brief scenes from a road trip through Ontario. Driving a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, Young visits the rural town of Omemee, where he spent a key part of his formative years, and reminisces about his former neighbors and their daughters. As he drives past bulldozers transforming the landscape, he remarks, 'It's all gone... it's still in my head.'

Jonathan Demme’s third concert film with Neil Young in six years provides a close-up look at the rock iconoclast doing an intimate, though not necessarily quiet set on his 2011 solo tour. Serious fans who are used to the singer-songwriter’s uncompromising ways will certainly want to see the film, at home if not in cinemas. But Journeys may be a bit too far from the middle of the road to attract as big an audience as Demme’s 2006 performance documentary Neil Young: Heart Of Gold.

The privilege of teaming with Neil three times — it’s like, 'I got to do that in my life?’ Demme said from his home in Rockland County in upstate New York during an interview for the Neil Young story running in Sunday's Arts & Books section . “He’s been a gigantic character in my heart and brain since I was a hippie like him back in the ‘60s. His music was my companion for decades before I even met him.”

I asked about the distinctly different tone of each of their three films, each using pointedly different approaches to avoid any sense of repetition from one to the other.

Only 100 tickets will be sold for this special 'Premiere' screening of the film by Jonathan Demme. Youngtown Museum, headline sponsor of the event is generously giving each ticket holder $2 off admission to Yountown Museum the day of the show-June 23rd or the following day-Sunday June 24th. In addition,ticket holders will be entered to win a 'Journeys' Film Poster.

Shot at the end of Young’s tour in support of his critically praised ‘folk-metal’ album Le Noise, the concert mixes songs from that album with a few old favourites and some rarely heard or unreleased numbers. Young plays completely solo, accompanying himself mostly on treated acoustic or overdriven electric guitar, and while there are a few duds in the set the approach works well on several of the oldies and the stronger new songs.

Demme and cinematographer Declan Quinn (Leaving Las Vegas) shoot most of the show in mid shots or close-ups that accentuate the intimate feel, only gradually letting the hall and the audience become part of the film. Most unsettlingly intimate are the shots from a camera, apparently mounted on the mike stand that captures the lower half of Young’s grizzled face and, at one point, a gob of his spit.

"Neil was open to the idea of doing a little road trip," Demme said. "Gosh, got so close to that little town in Ontario where he grew up [Omemee]. I felt it would be fun and interesting to give us some suspense of filming him driving to the concert [at Massey Hall in Toronto]. I really loved that part of the film -- especially as a Neil Young admirer, to put it mildly.”

“Neil Young Journeys” opens a limited theatrical engagement on June 29 at the Nuart Theatre in West Los Angeles and also will screen June 18 and 19 as part of the 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival .

"Heart of Gold," shot not long after Young had undergone brain surgery in 2005 to relieve a potentially life-threatening aneurysm, seemed to emphasize the therapeutic and restorative properties of music. "Neil Young Trunk Show," visually much grittier than the warm look of "Heart of Gold," underscored the visceral energy central to a rock 'n' roll performance.

With "Journeys," Demme appears to sidestep the fan perspective to hone in on the experience of playing music, lingering generously on shots of Young's hands as they work different guitars and keyboards, his mouth as he sings, his face as he wrestles with questions posed in his lyrics, including, "When will I learn how to give back?/ When will I learn how to heal?" as he does in "Rumblin'."

While it’s been nearly four years since Jonathan Demme‘s last narrative feature, the filmmaker is still keeping busy. His latest film comes in documentary form, as he followed around musician Neil Young during his 2011 tour, most specifically surrounding his trip to the artist’s hometown of Toronto at the concert venue Massey Hall. As I’ve never been overly invested in Young’s work, the documentary seems to be a little plain-looking and something possibly only for fans. At least the filmmaker is still working, but this first trailer for Neil Young Journeys only makes me eager to see another fictional work from Demme.

While filming Young in concert last year at Massey Hall in Toronto, Demme employed microphone-mounted cameras to capture the performance from unusual angles, including close-ups of Young's mouth. In the middle of the song "Hitchhiker," which traces the musician's life story from his early years in Canada through rock stardom in the U.S., saliva lands directly on the camera lens.
