Practising English outside of school

Yes, there're plenty of ways to practice your English in more informal ways, which can be very enjoyable too. Don't use your English just in the classroom!

Here's a list of some ideas on how to practice a language after lessons at Link School in London:

- Use newspapers and magazines. Many of them are free. If you choose one that interests you, you will enjoy it more AND learn words and phrases that are more likely to use. Read some articles quickly to find out what they are about, and read some more carefully.

- Use the internet. Again, choose subjects that interest you. Use a translator (eg Google) only when necessary! Have an online dictionary open for the difficult words, ideally one that has sound and gives examples of word use (eghttp://dictionary.cambridge.org.

- Watch TV and DVDs, listen to the radio. Use subtitles and change the language on the DVDs if you can. For less music, more talk radios we recommend BBC 4, BBC London and LBC radio.

- Socialise and make friends with people who don't speak your own language.

- Write your shopping lists in English.

- Put labels on everything all over your house with their English names eg iron, salt, towel, going upstairs. Put those labels above your sight level for better memorising.

- Have a notebook with you all the time. Write down any new language you want to remember, or you want to look up later.

- Join a conversation club. English people can practise your language and you can practise their language.

- Talk to yourself – in English!

- Create word pictures. You can use bubble diagrams, drawings, or doodles of words, whatever works best for you.

- Get a penfriend! Someone who you can write letters to. You could ask them to correct your English. You can find them on language exchange forums.
