Black History Month –Remembering the Famous African Americans

Black History Month is one of the most popular observances that are held annually within the United States of America, United Kingdom, and Canada. It is held every year to remember and show honor to the famous african americans who have sacrificed their lives for certain revolutionary movements, or have made some important contribution for the nation’s welfare.

Presently, Black History month is celebrated in the month of February in US and Canada. However, in UK, it is celebrated in the month of October.

Today in Black history month, everyone celebrates. However, things were not like this, even two decades earlier. Only the black people used to participate in this event. These days, it is considered to be one of the major events within Canada, UK, and US.

Start of this event

It was way back in 1926 when notable historian C.G. Woodson along with other members who were working under “Negro Life history” proposed to celebrate Negro History Week on the month of February. It was planned that the event will take place on the second week of February. There was significance on choosing second week of February in particular. It is on the second week of February that President Abraham Lincoln was born. At least, the history speaks so. In the second week of February, another notable American social reformer and orator, Frederick Douglass was also born. To remember these two notable late personalities, the second week of February was fixed. The event met with tremendous positive response and the creation of several clubs on black history took place. It became even more popular within school and colleges. Now the concept has changed as we dedicate an entire month to celebrate those famous African Americans who have influenced our culture for generations.
