Ways to Teach Sight Words to Kids
Teaching your child to read is important for the growth and development of your kid. You always wish that your child reads fluently without any interruptions but this is only possible when you teach them through the help of sight words. These words occur in the English language and represent the spoken language’s sound. Children who learn to read in the early grades acquire one of the most basic skills needed to continue their education and be fully-functional..
It should however be kept in mind that English contains a large number of words which do not follow the phonics rule and may represent more than one phoneme depending on context. Educators encourage new readers to develop the ability to recognize these sight words with the help of various sight words activities. By memorizing these phonetically irregular words children can focus more on reading words that follow the rules of phonetics. It is easy to teach kids to recognize these words by presenting them with illustrations of sight words along with print versions which help them make important connections between the object and the word.
Flashcards or posters with a colorful picture and the word written on it are also an excellent sigh word teaching tool. Parents or teachers can even make children draw their own pictures of each word on the same page to help them link the print with the visual. Use of sight word games is also a good technique through which these words can be taught in an effective manner. As these words appear frequently not only in writing but in conversation as well, hence it is important for a child to identify them and become an avid reader. Once children have had the opportunity to study new sight words through game they would be more interested in learning and this would also strengthen their retention power.
If you find your child, facing problems with sight words do keep in mind the various techniques through which you can help him learn and recognize the same when he sees them next time. Help your child memorize them slowly and easily.
