The Process of Data Logging
What is data logging? This is a collective process of gathering data through sensors, analyzing the same along with saving and giving an output result for the entire collection and analysis process. Data logging process is a common practice in various scientific experiments. This process is necessary in scientific experiments to collect data faster than a human can do and accuracy of the data is very much necessary, hence, data logging plays an important role here.
Frequency of sound, intensity of light, vibration, temperature, and electric current, changes occurring in the states of matter, pressure and time are few examples where data logging can be useful. Data logging has difference with data acquisition, in historical context, though these two terms are used interchangeable. This process is useful when you need a huge amount of data collection and with accuracy.
A device called datalogger carries out the data logging process. This device also called as data recorder. It is an electronic device and collects data for you over the period through the sensors or any other external device. A datalogger is essentially based on a digital processor or a computer. This equipment is generally small and portable. This contains a microprocessor and operated by battery. A datalogger is equipped with a sensor and an internal memory that stores data that are collected.
There are many modern datalogger that comes with software to be installed in the computer and this software help you to see and analyze the data that is being collected by the datalogger. In many datalogger there are in-built keypad and LCD screen that help you to play around with the collected data. These devices are programmable. The advantage of using a datalogger is that you can automatically collect data at an interval of every 24 hours if you program the device.
