Singing and Speech Lessons for New York City Residents
Before we humans learned to write, we first communicated with each other using sound. A baby’s first wail as he leaves the womb is, in itself, a way of communicating his distress; we respond to its cry instinctively. Language developed from our need to communicate with other humans in a more structured way than, say, merely pointing and grunting.
Along with plain spoken language, humans have also found that communicating through song is an effective means of better conveying emotions. Singing—as if you didn’t already know—is the act of producing musical sounds. It can be done solo or in a group, and with or without the accompaniment of musical instruments. People sing for pleasure, for profit, and for religious as well as a variety of other reasons, often concentrating on one or more musical genres like rock, ballad, and jazz.
Even though we were taught to speak from an early age, not everyone can speak well. The factors affecting a person’s ability to speak well include self-confidence, practice and, not surprisingly, the health of the vocal chords. Speaking well is an essential skill, especially for people who interact with others frequently or who want to make a living through speaking.
Singing and speaking both have their roots in the use of the human voice. The human voice is produced in the following manner: The lungs produce air which passes through the windpipe (trachea), back of the throat (pharynx) and voice box (larynx), where the air pressure vibrates the vocal folds and produce sounds released by openings in the mouth and nose. The quality of the sound waves is affected by the shape and position of the speech organs like the lips and tongue.
Voice quality and speech are extremely important to aspiring singers and actors. Those who want to make it on Broadway, for instance, often devote plenty of time and energy at perfecting their craft. Even those who are not blessed with strong vocal chords from birth can learn to sing well through training and practice. To this end, many opt to take New York singing lessons to train their voices to reach notes that they may not normally be able to hit.
New Yorkers, as we all know, have a very distinctive accent. Unfortunately, at times, New York speech may not be suitable for some roles that aspiring actors would like to play. This puts these actors at a disadvantage.
Fortunately, New York vocal lessons as well as speech lessons are available for those who would like to neutralize their accents, learn to better project their voices, and improve their vocal range.
