Role of Electromagnetism in Saving Your Data

Children enjoy playing with magnets, and we, the grown- ups, just do not give a damn. Today, it is because of these magnets that we are able to enjoy the wonderful electronics and technology. Magnetism has led to the discovery of Electromagnets which has lots of benefits like increased magnetic flux density controllable with the flow of electricity, higher performance and temperature limitations. The history of data storage is quite old and in olden days, the use of punch cards was famous. But with the invention of electromagnetism, it became easier to store, read and edit data. As the polarity of an electromagnet can be reversed with the change in flow of electricity, this became possible to record and edit data on magnetic disks..

The heads of a magnetic storage device are U-shaped located directly above the magnetic tape. When electricity is passed in these conducting heads, they generate an electromagnetic field. The direction of field is reversed with the change in flow of electricity. The magnetic tape is mainly Mylar, aluminum or glass coated with a magnetic material like ferrous oxide. The electromagnetic field is produced on the head gets conducted to the other using the ferrous coated material as the medium. This magnetic field polarizes the magnetic tape as it passes over and the magnetic particles get aligned to the field direction..

Encoding methods for magnetic media uses two categories of encoding known as the MFM (modified frequency modulation) and RLL (run length limited). So now, you can feel the importance of electromagnetism. We feel so insecure without a data storage device. And worst happens during loss of data. But whatever it is, we must be thankful to the creator of this great invention as without it, we would have ended in deep trouble with saving our important data.
