What are harrows?

They are the agricultural equipments which are used for the soil cultivation. They are used for breaking up and smoothening of soil affter the process of ploughing. There are 4 different types of harrows available: Disc, Chain, Tine, & Spring Tine.

The main purpose of harrowing is to break up soil lumps and provide a much finer finish which helps in making the soil structure much appropriate for use of seedbed. Harrowing is also used for removal of weeds. Right after sowing, covering of seeds is necessary. This is done effectively with the help of chain harrows.

Traditionally, apart from labours, harrows were also drawn with the help of domestic animals, like mule, oxen, and even horses. But after green revcoloution, they are now drawn by tractors. They are seen wither mounted on 3-point hitch or trailed by drawbar.

Describing chain harrows:

This type of harrow is normally used for light or milder works, like covering the seed. They are also used for leveling the tithe. chain harrow is often used for spreading out dung in pasture land. It also useful for breaking up on dead materials present in sward. These days chain harrowing concept is followed in leveling the sports grounds. They can effectively remove indentions and boot marks, while smoothing the ground.
