Possible Disadvantages to a Dedicated Server
Dedicated servers are pretty much known as the granddaddy of all servers. With a dedicated server you get a server entirely to yourself, and it will hold only the data of your website. But with every positive comes a negative and unfortunately, that is the case with dedicated servers as well. Below are some of the possible disadvantages that come with a dedicated server, and they're some you should consider if you’re thinking about buying a dedicated server – but aren’t sure that your company can handle one.
Of course the biggest disadvantage that always comes up first when speaking about dedicated servers is the price. Because dedicated servers are the best servers that you could find for your business, they are also the costliest. If you’re a very small business, and you don’t participate in any e-commerce or other business online, you might not be able to afford the cost of a dedicated server; but that’s okay because you may not need one. For businesses that require the benefits of a dedicated server, but don’t have the means to pay for it, a virtual private server might be a better option.
There's another disadvantage that comes with dedicated servers that pertains to price, too. This is whether you want an unmanaged or a managed server. With a managed server, your web hosting company will take care of everything for you. They will perform all the maintenance and upgrades, and ensure that your server is always in perfect functioning order. But, with this service also comes an additional fee. And if you’re already wondering whether or not you can afford a dedicated server, you probably can’t afford the services of a dedicated server either.
Web hosting companies will also offer unmanaged dedicated servers – a server that you manage completely on your own, with no help from your web host at all. This could be a much cheaper option, if you have the know-how to manage a dedicated server all on your own. But often when companies choose an unmanaged dedicated server, they hire an IT consultant, or even an entire team, that can run and manage the servers for them. With this of course, there will be even more costs, and probably more than what your web host would charge for a dedicated server. If you're already worried about the cost, you probably won't be able to afford an unmanaged dedicated server, unless you have the capabilities to take care of it on your own.
Dedicated servers are the best on the market that you can use to run your business. However, that doesn't mean that they're perfect for you and your business. Know the potential disadvantages that come with them, and whether or not they apply to your business. This is the only way to really tell if a dedicated server is going to be the best solution for you, or whether you need to look at other options.
