Work Permit for New Zealand and Citizenship
Work permit for New Zealand is for international workers who wish to work in New Zealand. The objective of a work permit is to contribute to the development of New Zealand industry and economy. The permit is granted on a temporary basis which specifies the maximum amount of time you are allowed to live and work in New Zealand.
To be eligible for work permit you must be in good health, have a valid passport and genuinely intend to work lawfully for a limited time in the country.
There are two types of work permit for New Zealand which include the following:
Skilled stream this include of four broad policies and a small group of other categories which facilitate the entry of skilled people. The streams include:
• Work to residence policy facilitates the entry of people whose skills are in demand in New Zealand.
• General work policy is for people required on a temporary basis to fill shortages where new Zealanders are not available or cannot be readily trained to do the work.
• Student and trainees policy facilitates the entry of overseas students to gain practical experience as part of their studies in New Zealand.
• Study to work policy is for overseas students who have completed a qualification in New Zealand to undertake employment after studies.
• Family stream this enables partners of holder of work permit to undertake temporary employment in New Zealand including holders of student visas who are able to meet the requirements.
New Zealand citizens are those who were born in New Zealand have been granted citizenship in an official ceremony or are in New Zealand descent with confirmation from department of internal affairs. People born in the Cook Islands, Njue and Tokelau are automatically New Zealand citizens by birth. If you are born here on or after 1 January 2006 you are a citizen only if at least one parent is, at the time of the birth, a NZ citizen or permanent resident, or a permanent resident of the Cook Islands, Njue or Tokelau.
You are a New Zealand citizen by descent if you are born overseas to a mother or father who is a New Zealand citizen otherwise than by descent. You are a New Zealand citizen if you are legally adopted by a New Zealand citizen. In order to be eligible for New Zealand citizenship you need to be at least 16 years old, have been in New Zealand with an entitlement to be here indefinitely for at least 1, 350 days during the 5 years before your application and for at least 240 days in each of those 5 years. You are in good character, have knowledge of New Zealand citizenship and have sufficient knowledge of the English language.
