Questions to Choose a Tours and Travel Company in India

India is the land of plenty, and it offers up a plateful of whatever it is you hunger for. A land of diversity, this is one place where you can do anything from mountain trekking to temple worshipping to sipping ‘chai’ at a roadside stall. The key to having a perfect vacation in India is pin-pointing what to see and do, and then selecting the best package tours from a tour operator who can give you what you are seeking. When selecting a tours and travel company / Tour Operator, you must ask following questions. These questions would help you in selecting the right tour package based on your needs and the travel expectations.

Q1. Do you offer tailored tour packages?

A complicated mosaic of deserts, mountains, coastlines and backwaters, India is also home to some of the most exotic aquatic and jungle life. With over 1500 dialects, this country is also a veritable hotbed of cultural activity. If you are beckoned by the call of history, visit temples steeped in ancient rituals and learn about historical monuments that timeline India’s fascinating past. With the diversity of India’s offerings, and the different interests of people across the world, a conventional ‘all for one’ tour is not what is required. The best tour operators are the ones that offer tour packages tailored to meet your interests and holiday expectations. Make sure the operator you choose in India provides you with the same.

Q2. How long have you been in business for?

Today, thanks to the Internet, even a small, inexperienced company can look fantastic online. With a few bells and whistles, a company that has just got off the ground can give you a very misleading impression. Don’t be hasty in making a selection; spend some time finding out if the company has been in business for long and the kind of experience it has.

Also ask how long the company has been offering specific tour packages that interest you. A tour that has been offered numerous times in the past will give you a certain amount of confidence and a lot more insight as to what you can expect. On the other hand, a tour that has been started recently may very well have teething problems, a fact that you should be aware of. The last thing you want is to be surprised on your vacation.

Q3. Can I speak with someone who has used your tour?

Good tour operators will be able to connect you with people who have taken their tours. This is a source of valuable input as it allows you to learn about other people’s experiences with the company, the tour that you are interested in, and the kind of people that were on the tour – all important elements of a happy holiday.

Q4. What kind of people can I expect on the tour I am interested in?

When it comes to your holiday, you want to ensure that you are in the company of fairly like-minded people, preferably in the same age group. For instance, if you are an adventure seeking mid-twenty year old, it’s probably not a good idea to be clubbed in a tour full of mid-forty year olds interested in sight-seeing. While a little change is good in terms of gaining new experiences, a tour is not the place to be forced into doing things that disinterest you. For this reason it is critical that you ask your tours and travel operator what sort of company you can expect on your tour.

Q5. Tell me more about your experience with this particular tour.

Once you have shortlisted the tours that interest you, ask the tour operator about the history of the tour packages. Find out how quickly the tours fill up as per past experience and ask if the operator has ever had a reason to cancel it. This query is important for two reasons: Firstly, if it is a very popular tour with limited seats, then you should be aware of this so you can reserve your seat in time. The last thing you want is to find the perfect tour and realise you were too late to book your place on it. Secondly, if the tour has a history of being cancelled in certain months due to too few people being interested, then you should be aware of this possibility, so that you can have a backup plan in place. Nothing can kill the holiday mood quicker than a tour that gets cancelled out of the blue.

Given the large number of tours and travel operators in business today, and the wide variety of package tours offered by them, it is important that you find a reputable tour operator who delivers on all things promised. The most important criterion is to look at the reputation of the tour operator before making a selection. Well reputed and popular tour operators may cost more than the smaller, inexperienced ones, but at least you can be assured of a certain quality with regards to stay, food, travel and overall experience. This leads to peace of mind which is the key component of a successful getaway. So before you select any package tours make sure that you have asked around and got satisfactory answers to all your questions.
