Choosing What to Do in Kyoto

Whether you are staying in one of Kyoto’s 5-star establishments or one the many affordable, cheap Kyoto hotels, you’re going to be offered a lot of information about things to do in Kyoto while holidaying there. All of the locals have different opinions regarding this so be prepared for an information overload whenever you ask for recommendations. Arguably, one of the most common suggestions is to go and see the cherry blossoms when they are in full bloom. However, there is so much more to this city than that.

There are a number of events and festivals that take place 6 months of the year between the months of February and October. During the summer months, you’ll want to attend either the Gion Matsuri in July (considered to be one of the top three festivals) or the Daimonji Gozan Okuribi in August. The latter takes place in North-western Kyoto and features the numerous floating candle lanterns launched on Hirosawa Pond. The Cherry Blossom festival in April and the Aoi Matsuri in May are also worth considering.

Finally, Kyoto offers a number of walking tours that are well worth taking. “Walk in Kyoto” is by far the most popular one and is an English-speaking tour that takes about 5 hours to complete. A large Buddhist temple and a number of Shinto shrines are the key features of the tour. Ironically, this walking tour does not take you to any World Heritage Sites but it does offer a reasonably acceptable view of the city.
