The Great Migration: a Once in a Lifetime Experience

The sight of more than a million animals running across the Serengeti plains is truly a once in a lifetime experience. This unique event is called the Great Migration which is the migration of the wildebeests across the Serengeti that happens once each year. The migration culminates when the animals cross the Grumeti River. This is something that you cannot experience in another part of the word except the Serengeti.

What makes the Great Migration a unique event is not the migration of the animals alone. There are a lot of exciting events that also occur during the migration. During the migration, the wildebeests become easy targets of lots of predators in the area. The predators take advantage of this opportunity. They see the wildebeest migration as a sort of annual buffet where they can eat all the meat they want. There are lots of predators in the Serengeti such as hyenas and lions and they all come to partake of the annual parade of prey across the plains of the Serengeti. As more than a million wildebeests thunder across the plains, the predators snatch them up. It is very exhilarating to watch the predators gracefully attack their prey. It is like a scene straight out of a wildlife documentary on television.

If you want to experience the Great Migration then you must know that this event does not happen each month. This is a yearly event and there is really no exact date. Experts can only give an approximate date on when the migration will happen so planning your trip can be very tricky. It is best to consult with local experts with regards to the planning of your trip.

The wildebeests migrate across the Serengeti to the Masai Mara in search of fresh grazing areas. The migration will depend on the rainfall in the area but that can also be unpredictable. Experts can only estimate that the migration will occur sometime in May to June. The wildebeests are expected to reach the Masai Mara approximately in the early part of July or even as late as August or September. They will stay at the Masai Mara until October or November. They are estimated to begin their migration back the toe Serengeti from Masai Mara sometime in November to January. Knowing the estimated schedule of the migration can be very helpful in planning your trip to witness the Great Migration.
