History of Alicante- Spain
Alicante city is a famous tourist destination among the tourists from all over the world and especially from Europe. This beautiful city of Spain is on the Mediterranean coastline. Alicante city is located in the region of Valencia in Spain and this city has the distinction of being the 2nd important area in Valencia region. The population of Alicante is more than thirty three hundred thousand individuals. Alicante city plays an important role in the tourist industry of Spain, as every year a great number of people visit this place of Costa Blanca to spend their holidays and it helps Spain’s economy to earn through this tourism.
History of Alicante:
Alicante city has its history which originated many centuries ago from very secure and planned places, which are located along the sea. These places include Mt Benancantil, Benalua, Albufereta and the hilly region of the Serra Grossa.
During the Moors rule over Alicante, this city saw some growth and development. However, during 1246, King Alfonso X occupied this city. During the year 1308, King James I merged Alicante area into the Kingdom of Valencia and finally during 1490, Alicante was given the status of “City” by Ferdinand, who was the famous Catholic ruler of that time.
After almost hundred years of getting the status of a city, Alicante got the status of becoming a natural coastline of Castilla Kingdom and it helped the Kingdom to increase the trade through shipments. This development of the maritime trade in the region helped a lot in the growth of Spain and Alicante. Very soon, Alicante became the 3rd largest dealing and trading city of Spain.
Alicante city went through a series of bombing for a week during 1691 by French Armada and then during the start of 18th century, this city went through Succession War, after the attack on the Alicante castle by the Brits. During the famous War of Independence in 1804 to 1814, Alicante city was the provisional capital city of the Kingdom of Valencia.
Alicante city re-gained the path of growth at the start of 19th century with the development of the railway tracks and it helped the progress of the city both, as a trading port and railway trade. The same century saw the demolition of old city walls and creation of boroughs by the city authorities.
Today, Alicante is known worldwide as a popular tourist and modern city.
