Getting Rid of a Broken Bolt is Simple
Tools Required:
There are many ways to remove broken bolt. The minimum tools required are a regular tool kit, set of left hand drill bits, a propane torch, electric drill and pliers.
The Use of Penetrating Oils:
These are light oils that find their way to the rusted threads and help to release the bolt. However this is a time consuming method as the oil takes a lot of time to soak in and not to be resorted to if one is in a hurry.
The Simplest Method:
This method involves the use of pliers. Assuming that part of its shaft is protruding from the metal surface it is best to remove it by clamping the pliers very tightly onto the shaft and attempting to turn it out. In most cases the bolt comes out.
The Next Step:
If the above method fails the propane torch has to be used and the shaft and the surrounding metal have to be heated to a dull red color. This will break the molecular bonds between the bolt threads and the material and then they can be removed using pliers..
The Drill Method:
If the former method does not work the drill has to be used. First one needs to grind or file the bolt’s shaft perfectly flat. Then the center of the shaft is to be located and a starter hole for the drill is to be created. The diameter of the bit should be less than the diameter of the bolt’s shaft..
The Last Resort:
If all these methods fail the only way out is to drill it out completely which means drilling out the mating threads where the bolt was fastened. However a larger bolt has to be used in that location.
