Gas Lamps - Their Charm and Importance

Gas lamps are the invention of the non-natural light from the ignition of a gaseous fuel. Before the advent of electricity, it was the most useful means of lighting. It was required to be lit manually in initial days but later on gas lanterns became self lighting. After the advent of electricity which is much economical for public use, its utility decreased.

The procedure of gas lanterns ignition is not rocket science. They are actually radiant lights. They blaze a fuel like kerosene to generate heat and it causes the mantles to generate light.

Gas lamps are generally used for street lighting. However in early days, gas lighting was also utilized indoors. Though it took many years of development and after so many tests it was eventually available for commercial use. After that, the gas technology was being installed in about each and every public center. But it was not for long because invention of electric light bulb was soon to follow.

Many cities in United States and Europe still use gas lit lighting. These lamps give a very nostalgic effect. That is why in the luxury market, there has been a huge demand, though it has its disadvantages as well. Many theatres were said to have burned down in America and Europe during 1800 and in early nineties because of them.

Though it has its upsides too as gas lamps can be used to save electricity. As it operates without any electricity, so during power cut offs, in cold climate, it can be very useful. As it will illuminate the entire place and at the same time it will provide a very warm effect to the ambience. That is why most of the time gas lit lamps are found in the cities with cold climate.
