Warehouse Management Software- Mistakes to Avoid

A Warehouse Management Software is an automated system that controls the entire process of storage and movement of materials in a warehouse along with all associated transactions thereof including shipping, receiving, picking and putting away of goods.

While choosing warehouse management software, be it as an up gradation from an existing system or transformation into a completely new one, there are common mistakes which if avoided can bring in efficiency in both the aspects of time and cost.

Five Common Mistakes that people do while choosing warehouse management software is:

• Not assessing the objectives/ business benefits of the software: While it is true that a warehouse management software would save time and money to a considerable extent, it is also true that if you misunderstand the benefits of automation and do not work on the interface and interaction between shipping systems, warehouse equipments, hardware, etc then the software would not deliver the goods.

• Not undertaking homework: Keep in mind that the more information you have about different warehouse management software, the better position you are in to understand which one would suit your needs the best.

• Not assessing benefits that are hard to quantify: Aspects such as improvement in production, increase in warehouse efficiency or even customer service are no doubt difficult to quantify. But these cannot be overlooked if one wants to improve the bottom-line.

• Underestimating the project ramp-up phase: Warehouse Management Softwares are not supposed to deliver great results straightaway after implementation. Any such system needs an operational ramp-up phase wherein it gradually proceeds to the desired level of performance through more and more training and software usage.

• Passing the Buck: Lastly, one of the most common mistakes that the top management do is to not remain involved in the implementation process.
