Wedding Insurance and Your Reception

Weddings are costly affairs. But you needn’t spend a fortune to get happy memories of a great day. Here are some tips on how to get more fun with less cash:

Invest in wedding insurance:

A good wedding insurance policy will cover your reception as well as your wedding. And you should be able to adjust your level of cover to suit your budget. Discuss how much or how little you plan to spend with your insurer. Once your insurance is in place, you can relax and enjoy planning your wedding and reception.

Decide on a theme:

The most memorable weddings aren’t always the big budget ones with unlimited champagne and fine food. Often, it’s the quirky touches that people remember. Once you decide on a theme, lots of ideas will spring to mind. If, for instance, you’re going for a village fete theme you might prefer a ‘cake stall’ to a more traditional, three-tiered fruit cake. The theme might also lend itself to less costly table decorations, bunting and home-made accessories.

Find an unusual venue:

It’s worth going off the beaten track to save money on your wedding venue. Places that are used to catering for weddings are aware that it’s big business, and can charge higher prices. You might be able to find somewhere like a village hall, country pub or barn that’s never been used for a wedding before, and get a good deal. Also, consider the day of your wedding. Saturdays will always be more expensive than a Friday, or even a Tuesday, if your guests are willing to be flexible.

Get your guests involved:

If you don’t intend to spend a great deal on your wedding, you could forgo a traditional wedding list and ask your guests to contribute to the day instead. Perhaps they could offer their services as a DJ, photographer or chauffeur. Or more creative ones might like to help with baking the cake, making decorations and providing entertainment for the children.

Skip the meal, just have a party:

These days, guests are likely to be sympathetic if you really can’t afford a big wedding. Perhaps you could invite a few close friends and family to your ceremony and a modest wedding breakfast, then throw a bigger party for everyone else later.
