Things to See and Do when You Stay in East Sussex Self Catering Accommodation

There are plenty of attractions in Sussex as a whole – indeed it often seems that the county is somehow better stocked with things to see and do than anywhere else in southern England! When you stay in East Sussex self catering accommodation, you’ll want to visit places within easy reach of your accommodation, particularly if you have children to think of. And after all who want to spend their holidays in a car driving halfway across the county to see other stuff?

So in a way you can almost choose where in Sussex you most want to stay according to the things there are to see and do in your immediate environment. To help start that decision, here’s a list of some of the things you can get involved with when you stay in East Sussex self catering accommodation:

1: Alfriston clergy house. The clergy house in Alfriston is a fine example of an interesting National Trust property – and the first building the Trust ever purchased, which it did in 1896 for a tenner! A cottage garden, and a medieval clergy hall to boot, both sharing stunning views out over the valley.

2: Battle Abbey. No stay in east sussex self catering accommodation can afford to miss out the abbey marking the spot where Harold fell with the arrow in his eye. Battle Abbey commemorates the end of the Battle of Hastings and the beginning of the Norman Conquest. The altar in the Abbey is said to be built on the exact spot where King Harold died.

3: Bodiam Castle. One of the most stunning in England, Bodiam is a perfectly preserved Medieval castle that rises sheer out of a moat surrounding it on all sides. You’ll recognise it from films and TV programmes – and you’ll love wandering around inside imagining what it must have been like when hay strew the floor and the courtyard rang to the sound of battle charger’s hooves. If you like this, look around for some of the county’s other famous castles – of which there are plenty!

4: Herstmonceux observatory and science centre. Staying in east Sussex self catering accommodation you’re bound, as noted, to come across one or two castles. The absolutely astonishing Herstmonceux, a genuine Norman pile still in full working order thanks to its continued habitation by nobility, boasts an added extra: a working observatory and science centre, where the visitor can explore the science of astronomy in times past and get involved in interactive exhibitions charting the current development of our knowledge of the stars. The observatory was the site of the Royal Observatory when it was moved out of Greenwich in the 1950’s.

There’s a lot more than this of course – these are just first thoughts about things you can see and take the family to do when you stay in east sussex self catering accommodation. There’s nothing like a bit of advice to get you started – though of course exploring the area for yourself is the best way to have a great time.
