A dot matrix printer is a kind of an impact printer that prints or illustrates characters by striking pin against the ribbon that in turn strikes against the paper. The mechanism used in this type of printers is quite similar to the conventional type writer and its working can be compared to many tiny hammers. A tiny metal rod, also called wire, is used to produce each dot and is driven by electromagnet. The print head of the printer is the moving portion and one line of text is printed at once. These printers usually work at a speed of 50 to 500 cps per second depending on the technology, efficiency and the cost of the printer and also the desired quality of print. Though they are much noisy than ink jet and laser printers, they have a unique quality of functioning with multipart forms commonly known as carbon copies. The number of pins present varies in between 9 to 24, 24 considered to be the best, and most efficient printers and can produce good quality letter type.

Dot matrix printers are also able to make multiple copies that are necessary for bill lading and invoices. Despite the fact they lack far behind in graphics and color, these printers are still in use as they are low cost and appropriate for businesses which require a large amount of print work.
