The recommended way to clean cartridge pool filters incorporates three major steps. First rinsing the loose dirt followed by soaking it in a cartridge cleaner and then rinsing again. This cleaning procedure also works for the diatomaceous earth filters and has proved to be an excellent way of cleaning filters. While following the initial step of filter cleaning it is important that you softly rinse off the loose dirt and impurities from your pool cartridge.

Using a spray nozzle for this purpose will not yield good result. Instead, you will end up in a mess because spraying can actually drive the dirt into the cartridge rather than cleaning it off. Hence, it is recommended to rinse the loose dirt gently with care. Soaking the cartridge overnight in an alkaline based filter cartridge cleaner solution is the next recommended process. You can think of using an acidic solution which will easily clean off the dirt but this acidic solution fails to clean the body oils and lotions that gets trapped and consequently retains the dirt in the filter cartridge.

After completing this step, a thorough rinse of the cartridge is required in order to remove the remnants of all chemical solutions and dirt. If you are using spray, also do not use it directly on the pool cartridge instead holding the spray parallel to the membranes of the filter would be beneficial.
