The Different Uses of Pond Liners for Facility Improvement

Pond liners are impermeable membranes used for water retention. It is used to line lakes, garden ponds, and artificial streams in parks. Landscapers use pond liners as a base to build a pond. It is protected by layers of sand, concrete, or fiber-matting.

A pond liner is made of medium density polyethylene (MDPE) and is much stronger than low density polyethylene (LDPE), a material commonly used for plastic sheeting. Medium density polyethylene has a tighter cell structure, making it more resistant to tear and puncture. When manufacturing a pond liner, MDPE is blended with LDPE or linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) to make it durable and flexible.

Retention ponds can be a solution to storm water runoffs which are byproducts of the construction industry. When rain hits a construction site, it picks up harmful pollutants, chemicals, debris, and sediment which are transported to a nearby storm sewer system. The storm sewer system then flows directly into rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, destroying aquatic habitat and causing steam bank erosion. Soil and sediment runoff is one of the leading causes of water quality problems in the country.

A woven coated reinforced polyethylene (WCP) liner is the suitable material to be used for the creation of a retention pond. It comes in a variety of mil thickness. The WCP liners last for 10 years when exposed and 20 years when buried. A WCP 24 (24 mil thickness) has exceptional ultraviolet resistance capabilities and is best suited for non-hazardous containments.

A WCP 24 pond liner comes in black and white. The white material only lasts for five years when exposed under the sun and is ideally used as a midterm pond liner. Alternatively, it can be buried for recreational use in a sports complex. On the other hand, the black WCP 24 pond liner has a 20-year life span when exposed under the sun. It can be used as a canal liner, nursery liner, golf course pond liner, and any long term non-hazardous liquid containment.

Other common applications of a pond liner are for decorative ponds, outdoor covers, vapor retarders, oil field pit liners, and interim landfill caps. Farm ponds like those for fish and plants must use the kind of liners that are safe for living organisms. Usually, these are made of 100% virgin resins.

Each is very flexible, made of linear low-density polyethylene with high elongation, and demonstrates tremendous tear resistance and bursting strength for excellent outdoor durability and chemical resistance.
