Sight Words – Significant and Challenging

Words can be better leant by sight and not exactly by the sound or spelling; this makes it easier for kids. However, Dolch sight words are important because they constitute 60 – 80% of all the reading material that kids go through early in their schooling. Hence, the importance of these words cannot be emphasized enough and it is the responsibility of parents and teachers to make sure that kids pick first grade sight words as early as possible and build their confidence.

There are many ways and techniques to teach kids these words. Considering that they cannot be taught using colors and pictures that kids usually start liking, the onus of teaching words like is, am, if, are and away is on teachers and students who need to make it as exciting and interesting as it can get. One of the reasons why it is important to teach these words at a very early stage is because without the ability to read these words, kids will have a lot of problem decoding what they are reading. Some of these words are impossible to sound out and hence kids have to practice to be able to pick them up by sight.

Fluency in reading depends on the fluency of kids at these words that is why Dolch sight words have to be taught to them at an early stage. Picking the words that comprise of such a large percentage of reading material gives kids the confidence in their own ability, which helps them to go ahead and succeed at other aspects of education. That is why fun ways and engaging activities are being designed to make the learning process extremely interesting for kids. Engaging ways are good to teach them fluent reading in an early reading and writing stage and deal with non-decodable words.
