Railways are very popular form of transportation in India. The fares are economical and as such easily affordable for common masses. Railways also have very strong connectivity and reach far off places. And from the time railways services have been introduced online, getting tickets is very smooth and comfortable. Due to all of these factors, thousands of people travel by railways every day.

Railways seats are always full during holiday season. However these days, railways tickets get reserved during normal season especially to major towns and cities. That is why one should try to book in advance compared to attempting to make reservation within few days of travel. You can book tickets approximately 3 to 4 months in advance.

Checking Seat Availability:

- The first step for reservation is checking availability. For the same visit the Indian railways website which is http://www.indianrail.gov.in/. Go the “train between important stations” and select “to” and “from” locations. You can then select travel dates, class (sleeper, AC chair, and Third AC economy etc), train type (Shatabdi, Duronto, Rajdhani, GaribRath etc), departure and arrival times and one way or return journey.

- The search result will show list of trains along with details like arrival, departure, journey time, days of run etc. You can check schedule and fare as well.

- For checking seat availability, choose the desired train and click on get availability.

- If seats are available, it will show Available. It will also show the number of seats available. Example: Available 40 mean that 40 seats are available for booking.

- If seats are not available, it could either show RAC or WL.

- RAC means Reservation against cancellation. RAC tickets entitle you to travel on train but you will be given a seat not a berth. However if confirmed tickets get cancelled, RAC tickets have good chances of getting confirmed. Example: RAC 10 implies if 10 confirmed tickets get cancelled, RAC will move to confirmed status.

- After RAC seats are full, WL or waiting list status begins. You are not allowed to board train with waiting list ticket. As with others, there is number with waiting list as well like WL 20. So when confirmed tickets start getting cancelled, your waiting list number improves. Waiting list can get confirmed if there are few days left before travel.

- If everything gets full, availability section will show Regret which means you cannot book tickets.
