Overview of Desirable Traits of a Nano Positioning System
Author: piezo | Posted: 29.05.2012A nano positioner is a device that allows the user to achieve nanometer and sub nanometer precision. A nano positioning system offers more precision than a piezo-driven stage. Some of the common desirable traits of such a system are linearity, sensitivity in terms of resolution, stability, and reasonable cost. The set-up of this device comprises a mechanical stage within which there’s a movable component inside a rigid frame. The movable constituent of this system with usually connected with the help of flexures. With the use of flexures, friction and stiction can be almost entirely eliminated. Thus, this component can move in different directions as well as angles at the same time. In many cases a closed-loop system is preferred because inputs can be given to the positioner along with monitoring its different functions.
There are several different components of such a positioning system. The first one is a piezo actuator(s) that make motion possible. The other components are a mechanical stage, sensors for measuring position and controllers that help maintain the desired position. All these components come together to create a positioning system that can offer precision up to nanometer levels. However, there are several other factors that constitute the most desirable traits in a nano positioning system :
• Firstly, a nanopositioner needs to provide very resolution.
• The next most important aspect would be accurate motion in the translational axes as well as at different angles.
• Precision motion should not however, compromise the stability of the positioning device. Even the slightest change in stability could alter the desired results. They should cause minimum incremental motion.
• Finally, the positioning system should boast of a fast response. With the advancement in this field, it has become possible to achieve all of these desired traits simultaneously.
Moreover, the modern nano positioning systems negate many of the drawbacks of conventionally used motion control technologies. It is important to mention here that a lot depends on the manufacturing process employed in making such devices. These very characteristics make it possible for the nanopositioning devices to offer performance that is decidedly superior to the traditional micropositioning stages.
It is often said that nanopositioning devices are only as good as the devices and technology used in manufacturing them. Similarly, the efficacy of the testing equipment for such devices is also equally important hence this process is carried out in specially made laboratories. They are capable of achieving the highest level of repeatability in your most complex operational tasks.
A cutting-edge nano positioning system is based on the use of parallel kinematics, as opposed to the conventionally used serial kinematics system. Parallel kinematics provide a much better control at the multi-axes level, thus allowing for higher responsiveness, stability and repeatability.
