Mobile Home Moves: Tips for Downsizing

In today’s economy, many people are opting to downsize from their large homes to something a little smaller. Mobile homes offer many people a way to own their own homes when they otherwise couldn’t afford to do so. Moving into a mobile home is similar to moving into an apartment except you don’t have to share walls with anyone. Your home is self-contained, just as a house would be, except there are shared facilities as with an apartment complex. While there are many advantages to moving into a mobile home, there are some drawbacks as well, particularly when moving from a larger house.

First, professional movers advise that because there is limited space in a mobile home, you should move your essential large pieces of furniture into your home first. This way, you can be sure that every piece that you want in your home will fit. These items include your sofa, beds and tables. Then, move your smaller items in based on their importance. You might find that you do not have room for every item that you had in your house, but by the time you get to those items, they will be of less importance and you should be able to part with them fairly easily.

Next, sell any items that are not going to fit in your new space. For example, if your kitchen is significantly smaller than your old one, you might need to sell your old refrigerator and get a smaller one. You are probably also going to have less storage space, so consider installing shelving in your cabinets to provide extra space for dishes and other kitchen necessities.

In your bedroom, you could discover that you don’t have room for a dresser or a chest of drawers. For this reason, you might consider selling your old bed and getting one that has under drawers. This will take up much less space in your room and still provide you with a comfortable sleeping space.

Keep your most comfortable living room furniture and sell the rest if it does not fit into the smaller area. Remember, don’t cram everything in even if you can. You still need room to move around in your mobile home and the furniture will just get in your way. It could even cause a dangerous tripping hazard. If you still have questions about how to move into a mobile home, consult your local moving company for more tips. They have experience in helping people downsize and can give you practical advice to make the transition easier.
