Make money from your passion
Author: annamawrick | Posted: 27.01.2012Many people enjoy home renovation work; everything from decorating to restoring old pieces of furniture. If you have a passion and a talent for projects of this kind, you could set up your own business, either renovating pieces of furniture for friends and colleagues or by buying cheap second-hand pieces and selling them on once you have given them your own personal touch.
When renovating furniture for you own home, all you have to consider is how the new-look wardrobe or cabinet is going to look in whichever room it is destined for. Most of the time, this renovation will involve removing old paint or varnish and applying a new coat; at the most you might choose to decorate the surfaces with paint and templates.
However, if you do decide to turn your hobby into a small business, then you also have to ensure that the pieces of furniture you are selling are safe to go in other people's homes. It is not enough for old furniture to be given a new cosmetic lease of life; you might have to do some woodwork to make sure that drawers run smoothly, wardrobe doors shut and that heavy items are not going to topple over unexpectedly.
If your skills are only in the artistic department, but you have your heart set on your own furniture enterprise, it might be worth taking a few basic DIY classes and investing in some decent tools. Most entrepreneurs start in their local communities and word of mouth could put you out of business before you even start if you are producing goods that don't meet other people's exacting standards.
Once you have made a success of your furniture business with friends and family, you can easily expand by using the money you have made to purchase broken-down and cheap items from thrift stores. After they have been repaired and redecorated beyond all recognition, you can advertise them for sale in your local paper or on Craig's List. Ebay is also an option, though bear in mind that it is not easy to send large items through the post, and as long as your business remains small it is also going to remain local.
