Yu Mountain is the centrepiece of the Yu Mountain National Park with a varied range of forestry and flowers. It is home birds, mammals, butterflies and amphibians, and is an ideal day out for nature lovers. Nearer to the hotels in Kaohsiung is the Dome of Light, next to the Kaohsiung MRT transfer station. Made from individual pieces of coloured glass, it is the world’s largest public art installation. Shou Shan Zoo has more than 100 species of rare animals and along its pathways, you will discover hidden temples and shrines.
Scenic Areas
A cruise around Kaohsiung Harbour provides panoramic views of this beautiful city. Not far from the hotels in Kaohsiung is the Love River. With its walkways and parks, the river is now the trendiest place to discover the delights of True Love Harbour, and from where the city’s skyline and shoreline can be seen. At night, the river is lit up providing a romantic atmosphere. Travel north and you will discover Lotus Lake, noted for its temple, pavilions, and pagodas.
Culture
There are many fine museums to visit which exhibit the city’s past, present and future. They offer a programme of permanent, themed, and interactive exhibits, making it an exciting visit for both adults and children.
Touring the City
Bicycle tours can be arranged but a cruise around the harbour offers wonderful views of the sea and wharfs and the buildings lining the banks. Several piers are open to the public, and it is worth taking a cruise on the Love River, where you can stop for coffee and a snack.
