A World Airline Hub

Handling nearly 32 million international passengers and a million tonnes of cargo a year, the Atatürk International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey is an important airport that connects Europe to Asia and the Middle East. The airport is one of the busiest in the world and handles international and domestic traffic in the region. Thanks to its smart energy conservation practices, Atatürk International Airport is also an energy efficient airport. The facility is located about 50 metres above mean sea level in the municipality of Yeşilköy and is one of the two airports in the region.

Passenger Flight Operations

Three of the four terminal buildings at the Atatürk International Airport work with international flight operations. The airport’s baggage organization system and explosive detection systems enable passenger baggage to be safely and accurately transferred from one airline to another without delay. This is vital, since the airport’s three runways navigate about 700 flights every day. High-speed trains and roads link the airport to Istanbul and other cities, making this a central transit point for the nearly 300 airlines operating here. With planned expansions to both domestic and international terminals, the airport is poised to become one of the busiest flight hubs in Europe.

Awards

The Atatürk International Airport has won several international aviation awards and honours through the years, including “Europe’s Most Comfortable International Terminal” and “Centre of Attraction for Transit Flights” as well as being designated the “Safest Airport in the Middle East and Balkans.” The airport’s consistent safety record, profitability and proximity to Istanbul Airport hotel rooms make it the preferred transit hub for travellers in Europe and The Middle East.
