Goa the Anjuna Flea Market Shopping

Goa is on India’s southwest coast and is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year who flock to its wonderful beaches, relaxed atmosphere and all year round good climate.
The Anjuna flea market is popular with the many backpackers who visit Goa, although it also caters for general tourists by selling local produce, souvenirs and artefacts. Its historical links with backpacking culture dates back to the 1960s, when the first western European hippies arrived in large numbers. It was in fact these ‘60s visitors who started to trade their personal belongings, from clothes to musical instruments and jewellery.
Wednesday is the peak day for the Anjuna flea market. Nowadays, traders are mostly local Indians as well as those from neighbouring Indian states. The Lamani people, similar to European gypsies and travellers, are also some of the most frequent traders, selling jewellery, dyed fabric and small personal effects.
The peak season for the Anjuna flea market is from October – April. Traders set and lay out their stalls along the beach to attract the tourists. The market remains open all day and evening from around nine in the morning.
