Goa - a Conflux of Historical and Natural Beauty
Author: tourandtravel | Posted: 25.06.2012My earliest memory of Goa dates back to my teenage. I was eighteen year old, a student of B.com 1st year, when I first visited this gorgeous land. Actually, I was invited by my elder brother, who worked, still working with a reputed logistic firm in Murgaon. I along with three collage-fellows flocked to Goa to celebrate New Year Eve. Even at the first sight, you begin to love this pure, pristine and picturesque land, and the same happened to me. Goa directly hit my mind and heart, and the result is that I have been to this place four times in last five years.
Believing on Hindu scriptures, Parashurama was the creature of Goa. He chose this place to perform fire sacrifices. The beautiful greenery, which abounds the state, was gifted by the ‘God of Sea’ to Parashurama. It’s also believed that Goa was a temporary residence of Lord Shiva when we came to earth after a dispute with ‘Parvati’. And one another legend says that Gomanchal Mountain in Goa is the place where Lord Krishna defeated Jarasandha. No matter whatever and whoever was behind the creation of this wonderland, Goa is just a piece of heaven which India got from its seers.
Goa’s history is glorious. At about 3rd century BC, it was a part of Mauryan Empire, and was later ruled by Satyahanas of Kothapur and then by the Chalukyas of Badami successively. In 1312, Goa first time came under Muslim rule, but very soon in 1370, they were forced to evacuate by Harihara. Later on, Adil Shahas of Bijapur took possession on Goa and made Goa Velha their second Capital. It was 18 May 1498, when Vasco De Gama, a Portuguese sailor, with his band of adventures stepped down at Kalikat Port. He opened the Indian Route to Portuguese, and the rest was endured by Goa for over 450 years. Influence of Portuguese can be seen everywhere in Goa: from its cultures to cuisines and architecture style to lifestyle. Several monuments, traditions & cultures and way of living in Goa reflect its close intimacy with Portuguese.
Today, Goa is known as the most exotic destination and the party capital of India. Beguiling sandy beaches, stunning coral reefs, amazing festivity and pulsating water sports give travelers a pleasure of lifetime. Amazing Goan fests and vibrant markets & nightlife also keep the tourists in trance. If you love history and art, Goa is just a place for you. Explore gorgeous forts & churches and several colonial ruins in Old Goa, and you’ll comprehend why the region is called the ‘Venice of East’. Art galleries, museums and beautiful heritage centers are worth visiting when you’re on Goa tour.
