There is no doubt that integrating classroom technology into today’s schools is beneficial, but the reasons why may be surprising. One may assume that the main reason that it is positive is that is provides a much needed entertainment factor for out children that are growing up in a world full of electronic stimuli. While it is fun for students to watch video clips and play interactive games, one component that really makes tech in the class a huge hit is the accountability factor.

Lesson plans for teachers typically include ways that they will ensure that their students grasp the material. Normally a pre-test and post-test are given to measure student learning. Yet, while ensuring that the learners are following along throughout the lesson it is often difficult to gauge the level of their understanding. Student response systems like hand held clickers make it easier for the educator to continuously assess the class to see if they understand and this system also makes sure that the students are answering the questions.

Instead of teachers asking questions out loud and using the traditional method of hand rising, he or she can pose a question and all of the children can simultaneously punch in their answer. The educators are held accountable because it will be obvious to them if their audience is grasping the material. They have the opportunity to re-teach critical points if the student response results are showing that a large number of people are confused. They also can see if there are specific students that are constantly answering the questions incorrectly. The classroom leader can make not of who is in need of some remediation at a later time. Through the use of a normal question and answer session, the professor may lose track of who has answered questions. This means that questions may be answered by the same individuals over and over and others may not answer a single question. This is less likely to happen with the use of clickers.

Often times, lesson plans for teachers, include information about how they will engage the students and check for understanding. Once concern is that some kids will not participate in the checks for understanding or that they will not give an answer that they truly believe. They may copy off of their friends and the professor will never have the opportunity to know what the student’s misconceptions or questions are. With the use of clickers all students are held accountable because they cannot see the answers that their friends are typing in. They also cannot refuse to participate because this will be obvious to the teacher that one of the clickers is not being utilized.

Classroom technology not only adds an engaging element to a lecture, but also holds the professors and the learners to higher standards.
