Jim Corbett Wildlife Sanctuary with its 600 sq km area and a core area of 322 sq km is possibly the best wildlife sanctuary in India. Situated about 1200 meter above seal level this sanctuary enjoys a temperate/cool climate throughout the year. Project Tiger was inaugurated on 01 April 1973 and the center of the tourist activity inside the park has always been Dhikala that is located inside the core area.

There are tigers and leopards as well as the lesser cats such as the jungle cat, the leopard cat and the fishing cat. One can see the sloth bear, the Himalyan black bear besides dhole and jackal, civet and mongoose and the common otter. There are porcupines, rabbits and elephants besides several species of deer and antelopes. Birdwatchers will be thrilled with the park’s more than 500 species of birds that include the migratory birds such as graylag and the bareheaded goose that arrive during the winters and the local varieties such as darters, cormorants and herons.

There are reptiles too such as the long-nosed crocodile gharial, turtles, tortoises, pythons, vipers, cobras and the King Cobra. Anglers will not be disappointed here either.
