No matter how much politicians and other officials try to deny it, the fact remains that there has always been a North South divide in England and it is not going to be fixed anytime soon. To be honest most of us northerners are quite happy with the way things are and we are not keen to have southern poofters, as Londoners have always been called, invading our space, especially when they come up to buy cheap property and then rent it out at southern prices, and usually to other people from down south.

I have always been proud to be a northern lass and am easily recognisable by my accent wherever I go in the word. I recently met a gentleman from Canada who had spent a couple years in York and even though we were thousands of miles away from home, it was nice to be able to talk to someone who not only understood me but who knew what an Eccle’s cake was! Coincidentally, we had both spent some time in Barnsley and knew the area quite well. It was a lovely meeting and we both enjoyed the reminiscing and promised to keep in touch.

Even though the housing boom is well over, and the country is still trying to recover from such economic straits, it is still advisable to try to get your feet onto the first rung of the property ladder before prices start to increase again. The north west of England is not known for its welcoming weather but for its welcoming hearths. The people on the whole tend to be friendly and try to put newcomers at their ease, even if they do tend to be a bit off with people from the south. Put it down to centuries of history and aggression.

Property prices are still lower in the north of England as opposed to those in the south and it is still possible to buy cheap property if you look properly. The easiest way to go about this is to sit down in front of your computer for a couple of hours and search through the websites offering properties in your desired location and within your price range. You can do this from anywhere in the country, andindeed from anywhere in the world, but it is advisable to make a visit before you buy.

The words “buy cheap property Barnsley” caught my eye in the newspaper last week and I was transported back to the time I used to live there. At the time I couldn’t wait to leave such a small town but now I wish that I could go back to that simpler time and appreciate the life and fun I had at the time, without all the stresses and tensions facing me on a daily basis, with no end in sight.
