Zermatt City Centre Things to Do
There is nothing boring about Zermatt. So if you are there and wondering what there is to do, there is no need to worry. You will need more than a few days to get through all the exciting adventures that the town has to offer.
For summer sports, test your climbing, hiking or mountaineering skills on one of the surrounding mountains. There are several to choose from including Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn. The latter just happens to be surrounded by four 38,000-metre peaks. If you’re up for the challenge, the Zermatt Alpine Centre organizes great glacier walks, day tours and training sessions.
Hiking is made simple here with the more than 400 hiking trails available. Follow them to the shores of some of the most beautiful lakes or ice blue glaciers. Many of these areas are complemented with great restaurants and mountain cabins.
Adrenalin junkies will love the Gornergrat cogwheel railway. Enjoy the 10,000 foot ascent, as you get ready to mountain bike along one of the three trails back to town. Summer skiing is also an option here, as there is year round snow on the Matterhorn. Choose from of the 6 ski lifts and 21 kilometres of pistes, or stay in town to try squash, beach volleyball, tennis, scooter riding, fly fishing, or paragliding. You might also consider spending the day on following a local adventure trail at Forest Fun Park.
Golf enthusiasts can try a round or two at the Matterhorn Golf Club. Located at Randa-Tasch, this 9-hole course has been split into two, with the River Vispa as a natural water challenge. This beautiful golf course is spread out over 21 hectares and contains a lake.
Aside from skiing, the winter months also offer a nice array of activities. Try heli-skiing for the ultimate ski rush, or a family day of tobogganing. Riffelberg is the place to head with the kids for a day on the gentle slopes. Of course there is always cross country skiing, ice skating, shoe shoeing, ski-touring, ice climbing and snow biking that can be booked at many of the hotels in Zermatt city centre.
