Milan Things to Do

Hotels in Milan City Centre are close to the city’s main attractions and activities. This is a big city but is easily navigable by tram or metro, or on foot. Just wandering through the city’s streets is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. There are hundreds of pretty and elegant streets leading to delightful squares and tiny churches. Because this city was heavily bombed in World War Two, there are some stunning new buildings too, which are rare in other major Italian cities. The juxtaposition between ancient and modern makes this a very interesting city.

Football

The Giuseppe Meazza Stadium (also confusingly known as San Siro) is home to two clubs – AC Milan and FC Internazionale. The rivalry between the two clubs is fierce and watching either club play at home attracts huge local crowds. The annual derby between the two sides is sold out months in advance but it is usually possible to get a ticket for another game and it is well worth it to experience the passion of the Italian football fan.

Exhibitions and Fairs

Milan is Italy’s commercial capital and it is the centre for huge numbers of trade fairs at the city’s exhibition centre, Fiero Milano, many of which are open to the public. There are fairs celebrating wine, chocolate, bags, shoes, cosmetics, jewellery and food. With three or four different exhibitions and fairs every month, there is bound to be something on whatever time of year you visit.

Cycling

While wandering around the city on foot is fun, exploring a little further afield by bicycle is easy. There is a cycle path from the Piazza 24 Maggio which follows the northern bank of the canal right out into the countryside. The path is over 25 kms long, leading to Robecco sul Naviglio, but many cyclists ride as far as Gaggiano, a pretty little village about 10 kms outside the centre of Milan. Bicycle hire is available in the square.
