Ankara City Centre Things to Do

As well as cultural attractions like the great museums and galleries in Ankara, there are also more active things to do here for all the family. Hotels in Ankara city centre place you at the heart of this great capital with elements of East and West blending in a heady mix of cultural interests. One minute you feel you are in an Aladdin’s Cave of spices and hand-worked copper plates and the next, back home in a modern shopping centre. This is all a part of the unique and exciting Turkish experience.

Railway Museum

For anyone with even a passing interest in trains, the Railway Museum is essential, especially for devotees of the Age of Steam. It is housed in the modern main railway station in Ankara and has a wide variety of working models, carriages and engines to muse over.

War of Salvation Museum

The first National Assembly of the new Turkish Republic once had its home in this building. All the faces, personalities and events of the War of Independence are on display here in a series of exciting exhibits that bring the times back to life. The captions are in Turkish but the exhibits speak for themselves.

Museum of Painting and Sculpture

There is a huge and comprehensive collection of Turkish art works housed in this modern building, located next to the Ethnography Museum. Modern art is well represented alongside more traditional forms from Turkey’s past.

Kugulu Park

Also known as Swan Park, this beautiful open space in central Ankara is ideal for an afternoon’s stroll. As well as an attractive lake full of swans, it also has a coffee shop with refreshments and a children’s playground.

Ataturk Forest Farm and Zoo

This makes a great day out with its restaurants, dairy farm, greenhouses and brewery, perfect for hiking, picnics and biking.
