The Dodge in World War II: Winning the War by Logistics

Every year, on the 11th of November, Canadians flock to war memorials to honor those who, as one popular quote goes, “gave up their tomorrows for your today.” It’s called Remembrance Day and it’s the Canadian equivalent of Memorial Day in the U.S. Yet, fallen soldiers aren’t the only ones who deserve to be immortalized in history.

“Dodge” is a name that helped the Allies win World War II not by firepower but by logistics. If it weren’t for trucks and vehicles Dodge made to support the war effort and expedite its end, the Allies in the frontline would’ve been fighting barehanded. As part of the British dominion at the time, Canadian soldiers benefitted from steady supply lines brought in by thousands of Dodge trucks and vehicles. They were used in various ways, such as:

Fire support: Aside from Dodge trucks carrying weapons, some of them were actually converted into a weapon, like the WC55. This light military truck had a 37 mm M3 gun mounted on its back and can be installed with other weapons. While the 37 mm gun was ineffective against the huge and well-armored German tanks, it packed a wallop against Japanese tanks in the Pacific.

Since soldiers were firing a big gun from a small truck, the latter had to have a strong chassis to support the gun’s weight and the shock from firing it. Other variants of the WC55 carried a light machine gun on top for the anti-infantry role. Even the strategic pc game Men of War adopted the use of the WC55 in the form of an experimental Dodge truck with armor plating, a machine gun, and a bazooka.

Ambulances: Some Dodge trucks like the WC54 were designed to carry wounded soldiers away from the heat of battle. Even if World War II turned out to be the most destructive conflict in the history of mankind, it could’ve been more destructive without medical support. Sometimes, they provided medical treatment on the spot if evacuation wasn’t possible. Today, that role has been filled by the Ram, a car model of Dodge Toronto residents prefer.

Command cars: Many popular generals like George Patton always wanted to be in the action—which meant driving through the mud just to get to the frontline. Some Dodge military trucks of the time were designed to carry Allied commanders through rough terrain. A Dodge Chrysler in Downsview continues to demonstrate its off-road ability with some of its modern models.
