Legend Lives On: the Work of Jagjit Singh
Although he passed away on October 10, 2011 a legend lives on as the music and work of Jagjit Singh still continues to inspire new listeners throughout the world. His work was quite unique in many respects which is why it is considered among the best of Indian spiritual music.
Singh was a Ghazal singer and he achieved such prominence he was dubbed “The Ghazal King”. For those not familiar with this type of music, it utilizes rhyming poetic verses to convey the deeply spiritual themes of the work. His wife was also a very talented and popular Ghazal singer and the two were able to form a successful duet that performed together for many years.
Jagjit Singh originally learned to sing when he was just a child. However, he did not develop much of a serious interest in music until later in life. When we see that a legend lives on long after his passing, we assume that there was always a desire on the legend’s part to be a famous singer. In Singh’s case, his rise to prominence was a slow one as this was not his original goal in life. As his interest in music grew so did his desire to study music formally which he did for several years.
In the mid-1970’s, Jagjit Signh released a ghazal album which took India by storm. His voice was original and unlike any other singer on industry. This lead him to becoming famous quite quickly and in a very short period of time he was established as a superstar in this genre of music. He was no flash in the pan as his success lasted many decades and he was still an in-demand just prior to his untimely passing.
Today, we are left with an extensive body of work on CD so, truly, a legend lives on and the memory of Jagjit Singh will not likely ever be forgotten.
