Better Protecting Your Antique Vinyl Albums
The age on your old vinyl albums appears noticeable; the colors have faded; the cardboard covers are ripping and even the front side of the album is peeling, all thanks to dust and moisture. If you ever wish to make a decent amount of dough on these rare treasures, it might be best keeping them out of the attic and closet and placing them inside a protective case that can seal out the dust. The return on your investment will depend on how much you decide to invest in maintaining the quality of the products, including the old record players you may have.
Dust
No matter how much soot old records get on them, most of them can withstand it and can be wiped off with a record cleaner, but the covers cannot be maintained with too much dust. From a dusty old attic to a filthy closet, these damp, dust-ridden places can present a series of hazards for your prized records, and to protect them, you’ll need some type of protective cover, which will shield them from harm. If you place your album within a storage bin, the dust and moisture that an attic, basement and closet will have will not affect the color and cardboard material most vinyl LPs have and use. Say you hoped to preserve your old collection of Bob Dylan vinyl records; a great idea would be to place them inside plastic bins that keep most dust out.
Cleaning
Okay, so a sealed container will do the trick to help preserve the condition of old records, but an aged record player will need more than just a plastic bin to keep it operating like new. In order to preserve one of these items, make sure you clean the major parts of the player at least once a month using a regular duster, and be sure to play a record or two to make sure it still can function. Depending on the age of the item and type of materials it uses, you always want to clean any wood or brass the player may use to keep the material shiny and looking as new as the day you bought it. When you do pop an LP in that does not play as it should, you may want to try cleaning it with a VPI record cleaner product to discard all the dust that may get caught inside the grooves.
Cleaning your vinyl records with these tools will also help ensure that your records stay working for years to come.
