Competition Between iPad 2 and Motorola Xoom
Tablets now plagued the electronic market. It is even predicted that in 2015 there will be 200 million tablets in use. Major manufacturers like iPad, Motorola, Samsung and Acer are involved in tough competition to dominate the market.
Among these manufacturers, iPad and Motorola seem to compete harder. Motorola Xoom hit the market using Google's Android 3.0 OS with improved interface, web browsing and hardware menu buttons. Then, it was followed by the release of iPad 2 with its ultra-slim design. The two tablets seem to be equal in many aspects and you may get confused in choosing one of them. Below is the comparison of the two tablets to help you make a wise decision:
Design and Display
The iPad 2 is a lighter, thinner and sleeker tablet than the Xoom. This apple's sequel weighs 1.3 pounds and 9.5 x 7.3 x 0.3 inches whereas the Xoom weighs 1.6 pounds and 9.8 x 6.6 x 0.5 inches. The iPad 2 features a very minimalist design with single port on the bottom and Power button placed on top. Meanwhile, Motorola Xoom doesn't have physical buttons since it is a Honeycomb. The physical buttons are replaced by on-screen controls. There are also differences in the display. The Xoom's display is bigger than iPad 2 in terms of size and resolution; it is 10.1 inches/1280x800 versus 9.7 inches/1024x768. However, its picture looks muddier than the Apple's sequel that is able to display brighter pictures. In terms of design and display, iPad 2 wins the competition since it offers lighter tablet and clearer picture.
Performance
The Motorola Xoom comes with a 1-GHz, dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and it combines a CPU and GPU on one chip. iPad 2 also features 1-GHz dual-core processor with the A5 chip. However, the GPU (the PowerVR SGX543MP2) is installed separately. This feature results in a 9x graphics boost than the first iPad. There are some problems when editing video using Motorola Xoom; it slows down as I add effects or make more edits. On the other hand, iPad 2 showed no problems with video editing; it was smooth while not very intuitive. In this case, this Apple's sequel once again wins the competition, as it is more responsive than the Motorola tablet.
Software and Interface
Apple doesn't make many changes in this iPad 2. Just like its predecessor, this new tablet features intuitive multitasking, wireless printing support and icon-driven interface. However, iOS' lack of a file manager and it can be annoying to have pop-up-style notification in this tablet.
The Motorola tablet uses Google's Android 3.0 OS, which is specifically for tablet. It means that you can access the apps via the System Bar easily and notifications are easier to review than iOS. Android 3.0 also comes with interactive gadgets and more ways to customize multiple home screens. In terms of software and interface, the Motorola tablet wins the competition since it offers better features and higher customization level.
