Flex Circuit Heaters Present a World of Possibilities
A flex circuit heater is one that is not rigid and can be shaped according to a surface that needs to be heated. These heaters are made from flexible materials such as silicone, polyester, polyimide etc. Rigid heating elements are often not suitable for surfaces that are curved or corrugated. However, flexible heaters conform to the surface in question.
This makes them a very versatile heating solution.
One very innovative use of a flex heater is in shoes. An etched foil can be laminated between the sole and the inner surface of the shoe to keep the wearer’s feet warm even. This innovation can also be applied to gloves and other types of apparel. By laminating flex circuits in insulating materials, quick and uniform heating can be achieved. Most solutions involving flexible heaters can be fully customized.
Here are some of the advantages of using such heater types:
• Customizable: As mentioned earlier, these heating elements can be made as per your order. They can be made in different shapes and sizes and can be laminated between different types of insulating materials. For instance, your manufacturer can provide you with a heating element that can be wrapped around large barrels containing a fluid.
• Choice of circuits: These heaters can be designed for heating a surface or object. And, they can also be designed to hold the temperature (heat) for a longer time. So, once the heating element has reached its desired temperature, it can be turned off. This leads to considerable energy savings.
• Uniform heating: The heat distributed by a flex circuit is very consistent and uniformly spread across the surface. For a large surface area, several equidistant heaters can be installed to achieve homogenous heating.
You can choose to integrate these heating elements in variable voltages. Today, these heaters are widely used in a number of industries ranging from transportation to military. Such heaters have also been used in the food and beverage industry.
One of the most common flexible heater types is the polyester heater. This material is very conducive to uniform heat transfer and lasts much long as compared with other flexible materials. It can be spread across a flat surface or can be wrapped around a curved surface. Moreover, it is resistant to water and moisture. There are a myriad of ways to make use of these heaters that are available in sizes ranging from a few millimeters to several feet. There are several manufacturers that are constantly engaged in research pertaining to the use of flex circuits in heating elements.
So don’t be surprised if you find a flex circuit heater in the most innovative uses such as a bathroom mirror, a hand grip heater or cabinet heater!
