Good attorney is easily to find, but great one is rare and of a kind. Outstanding and remarkable skills separate boys from real men. However, behind those skills we can see the same skills that separate mediocrity from real and genuine greatness that is true to all profession.
We differ in our own definition of what is good, mediocrity, smart and intelligent. What is good to me, may not suit to you. That's what we call individual differences that give uniqueness to our personality. But, one thing is for sure, only those who have passion and love for what they are doing can achieved greatness in the field they choose to travel. Only them can stand the test of time, and will surely maximize all possible means to their professional and individual growth. They were instilled with a strong drive to master and internalize all aspect of their profession. No memorization required, only determination and love for what they are doing can bring them there.
In order to become a smart and intelligent attorney, one should study the law thoroughly. Laws are your bible which all your actions will be guided by it. Study every aspects, from case law, evidence law, and most importantly the split-second command of civil procedure. These are very crucial in depending your client's right in every case.
Study the case, know its in and out. Gathered facts to support it. Just don't simply read it, rather understand and concentrate into it. Yes, you may know all laws, but bear in mind that there are times when a certain laws can be apply in different ways to other case. Each case has a complex relation to the existing laws and to a specific facts in your case.
Be objective. This is a very important skill a attorney should possess. In doing so, put yourself on your opponent's shoes and plan techniques in order to defeat your own case. Or even so, pretend to be a judge and make verdict of your case.
To become a smart attorney, you should know yourself first. This means, assessing your strength and weaknesses. In doing so, be objective and humble. Human as we are, we have tendency to be blindfolded by our own mistakes. Don't pretend to be someone your not. If you want to be the best, you should learn to transform those weaknesses into strength.
Develop a sound judgment. Don't let your emotion rule over you good judgment. Control it while you are planning a strategy to rattle your opponents that will lead them to make mistakes to your advantage.
Anticipate possible scenarios and plan reactions when facing as such. Learning to think by your feet is an advantage.
A smart attorney should also surround himself with great staff or people to work with. Know them personally so that you will know who to trust, how much to give and what to give them. Given only 24 hours a day, you can't do all things a attorney should be doing, thus having a diligent staff to work it for you is a must.
